Welcome

Welcome!

The year of Flutter (2020) is approaching! Flutter is one of the fastest growing github projects and it’s accelerating!

What is Flutter?

You probably already know the answer as this is a site for Flutter Developers. But if you’ve gotten here by curiosity alone – Flutter is a cross platform app development tool (for IOS and Android phones) similar to React Native but much more powerful and enjoyable. See https://flutter.dev/

I’m Bert. I’m a seasoned developer. Been there, done that. Seen Silverlight come and go. Seen Xamarin come and .. Seen React Native emerge. Now I see Flutter. wow!

I’ve developed in all these environments. Was sad to see Silverlight go. Not so happy working in Xamarin. Happier in React Native but frustrated.

And now? I’m smiling.

I love Flutter. I love that it works. I laugh at how little respect I used to give Dart and now – I love it!

For an emerging technology – Flutter has been relatively painless and surprisingly fun 🙂

I attended the first Flutter/Dart conference in Venice Beach in 2018. That was when Flutter was still alpha. Everyone was bright, interesting and accessible. I made my pitch for a Flutter Markup Language and they gave me a room to have a talk about it. I was an unknown. The idea was not that popular. But… They gave me a room and a soapbox to talk about it! No idea goes unexplored by the Flutter team.

In the almost 2 year period since I have watched Flutter grow up and spread its wings. We have Flutter for the Web in beta. Flutter for Native. And Fuchsia. All are promising and exciting. We have great tooling support. If you’ve ever tried to debug react native – you’ll appreciate Flutter. It just works. And it keeps getting better.

You can code in Android Studio, VS Code, IntelliJ with built in support or the IDE of your choosing. The supporting package libraries are filling out and getting solid. The future is looking bright.

My view is that Flutter is for developers and performance demanding designers. Real developers. Native developers. Great designers. You understand how things work. You’re sharp. Maybe you know C, C++ or linux and bsd internals. Maybe your a little more demanding of performance than the rest of the crowd and you’re tired of ping pong ui tweaks for ios, then android, then ios …

One thing I know. You’ll enjoy Flutter. I’ve known React Native developers that took the plunge and never looked back. I am one of those developers.

Please join me. Follow my blog. Send me ideas, feedback and articles if you’d like to help me. I will be creating a companion site FlutterDev.partners for those that want to collaborate and promote their services. I’m working on ideas for improving ui coding an will be sharing those on FlutterUi.dev as they materialize.

I am also developing lower cost Flutter programming talent. Some offshore, some onshore to help with projects. I’m taking on interns and talent that won’t break the bank and want to learn from working on real projects.

If you want to get better at Flutter or need help on your Flutter projectcontact me at bert@flutterdev.blog.

Stay tuned. And keep Fluttering.

Be yourself; Everyone else is already taken.
